Converter Sets

A converter set is a combination system which comprises a battery charger and inverters. The inverters may be single phase or three phase. The converter set is connected to a large battery bank. The battery charger is used to charge the battery bank at times when shore supply power or generator supply power is available. The single phase or three phase inverters are used to provide AC power from the battery bank.
Converter sets are used in situations where maintenance personnel require AC power but generators cannot be used - such as in tunnels or confined areas. The battery bank is the source of power. Later, when the maintenance is finished, the battery bank is charged at a depot. The converter sets are typically installed on maintenance wagons so they can be transported to wherever they are needed.
